Rioja

Rioja is the oldest Denomination of Origin in Spain since 1925, and the first to receive the Calificada certification in 1991. Today, it is positioned as one of the most renowned Denominations of Origin in the world, and its wines hold a leading position in the market, both nationally and internationally. Rioja accounts for nearly 40% of the value of Denomination of Origin wine in Spain and is present in 129 countries.

It has more than 66,000 hectares of vineyards under the D.O.Ca., and it is made up of three subzones with different viticultural characteristics: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental. In total, the denomination spans 144 municipalities, with 600 wineries and more than 13,000 winegrowers.

Rioja represents more than 40% of the value of Denomination of Origin wines in Spain and is present in 136 countries.

Climate
It is entirely variable depending on the subzone. For example, while Rioja Alta (26,786 hectares) is influenced by the Atlantic, Rioja Alavesa (12,934 hectares) combines both Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, and Rioja Baja (23,873 hectares) enjoys a distinctly Mediterranean climate. The confluence of both climates provides mild temperatures and annual rainfall slightly above 400 l./m2.
Soil
Alluvial and clay-ferrous soils in most of the region and clay-limestone soils in Rioja Alavesa and some areas of Rioja Alta.
