Douro

Douro is a wine-growing region in the north of Portugal that holds the distinction of Controlled Designation of Origin. This region received the Designation of Origin in 1756, making it the oldest in the world.

Climate
The climate in the Douro has a continental character, with cold winters and hot, dry summers. A long mountain range (sierras de Marão and Montemuro) protects the vineyards from the cold and humid winds coming from the Atlantic Ocean. Rainfall is unevenly distributed throughout the year, with the rainiest months being December and January, reaching up to 204.3 mm, and the driest months being July and August. The average annual temperatures range between 11.8º and 16.5º C.
Soil
The majority of the soils in the D.O.C. Douro are slate-based and, to a lesser extent, granitic.
