Bierzo

The D.O. Bierzo (approved in 1989) extends across the northwest of the province of León, in a transitional area between Galicia, León, and Asturias, encompassing 32 municipalities, several mountain valleys, and part of the Leonese plateau. The red wine made from the native mencía grape is the most characteristic product of the denomination.

Climate
It is one of the few Spanish regions where the Atlantic climate prevails. Temperate climate, with some humidity due to Galician influence but also influenced by the dry Castilian climate. The average annual rainfall is 721 mm.
Soil
The soils are clay-limestone with high slate components in the higher areas.
