Château Miraval is a winery located in Provence, in the south of France, in the town of Correns, department of Var, one of the three subzones of the A.O.C. Côte de Provence.
The first references to the castle that gives its name to the estate, and which dominates the 600-hectare property where it stands, date back to 1252. During that year, according to chronicles, Thomas Aquinas stayed for a few days in its premises. In the 16th century, the Prince of Naples joined the French court, settling there, and Miraval was included in the registry of Casas Nobles de Francia.
In 1850, Joseph-Louis Lambot, the inventor of reinforced concrete and then owner of the estate, built its immense winery, which, until the 1990s, only produced simple Vins de Pays, the French equivalent of Spanish Vinos de la Tierra. After several ownership changes, including that of jazz pianist Jacques Loussier in the 1970s, and with American Tom Bove as the owner, its viticulture was modernized.
In 2008, actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt purchased Château Miraval and partnered with the Perrin family, owners of Château de Beaucastel, one of the most prestigious wineries in the Rhône Valley. Since 2012, this family has been responsible for cultivating the vines, producing, and marketing the estate's wines.
The estate's vineyard spans 30 hectares and is planted on terraces, with clay and limestone soils, at an average altitude of 350 meters. From its fruits, cultivated traditionally without pesticides, herbicides, or chemical products, three different wines are made: the famous Miraval Rosé, made from cinsault, grenache, syrah, and rolle grapes, and a single-varietal white from rolle, both under the Côtes de Provence designation, as well as a coupage of rolle and white grenache, classified under the A.O.C.
