Bodegas de la Real Divisa

Bodegas de la Real Divisa is one of the oldest historic wineries in La Rioja and Europe, located in the town of Ábalos in the Rioja Alta sub-region. Its documented history dates back to 1367, making it a viticultural site of major heritage value, historically linked to the nobility and the Royal House of Navarre. The winery’s name comes from the emblem of the Jar or Terrace with lilies, symbol of the Order of the Terrace founded by King García III of Nájera in the 11th century. This emblem, still visible on the building’s façade, reflects the estate’s historic connection with the Navarrese monarchy. Since the 14th century, the ashlar stone building has maintained uninterrupted winemaking activity. The owning family holds the noble title of Marqués de Legarda, under which the wines are marketed, traditionally present at the tables of Spanish nobility. In 1895, Bodegas de la Real Divisa became the first Rioja winery to receive a medal at the Bordeaux Exhibition, consolidating its international prestige. The winery has approximately 40 hectares of vineyards located in Rioja Alta. The dominant grape is Tempranillo, covering around 90% of the vineyard area, complemented by Graciano, Mazuelo and small plots of Viura. The clay-limestone soils, continental climate with Atlantic influence, and altitude contribute to balanced ripening and wines of great structure and longevity. Bodegas de la Real Divisa combines traditional methods with modern winemaking techniques. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and lined concrete tanks, followed by extended ageing in oak barrels and bottle refinement. The winery produces Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva wines, as well as special high-expression editions. Its main wines are marketed under the brand Marqués de Legarda, including Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva, as well as special references such as Draco. The wines are known for their elegance, aromatic depth, balance and excellent ageing potential.
