Bodegas Berceo

Bodegas Berceo

Founded in 1801 by the Muga Barahona family, Bodegas Berceo is the oldest winery in the municipality of Haro, the heart of Rioja. Its current facilities date back to 1872 and are designed across five levels, adapting to the slope of the mountain. It is the only vertically designed winery from that era that remains active. This design takes advantage of gravity in the winemaking process, avoiding the use of machinery and preserving the grape's properties to the maximum. It has 70 hectares of vineyards (40 owned and 30 more controlled), distributed across different municipalities, and produces a small output of 70,000 bottles. Its wines age in French oak barrels located in underground cellars that once belonged to the Castle of Haro.

Throughout its long history, Bodegas Berceo has had several owners. In the 1950s, the Gurpegui Muga family managed to regain ownership; and since 2016, it has belonged to the Manzanos family, who continue the legacy by working with the founding family. The winery's name is a tribute to the 13th-century monk and poet Gonzalo de Berceo, who lived in the Monastery of Suso (La Rioja), depicted on the wine labels. Gonzalo de Berceo was the first to write verses in Castilian, in which he also used wine as a central theme.
