Jesús Rivero belongs to a lineage of winemakers with a centuries-old tradition, leading Bodegas Faustino Rivero Ulecia in Rioja. With the turn of the century, he decided to establish a new winery aimed at creating wines of excellent quality that reflect the personality of the Mendavia area in the Rioja Oriental. This is how Hacienda y Viñedos Marqués del Atrio was born.
In recent years, the winery has incorporated the fifth generation of the family: Manuel and Jorge Rivero, who have promoted a more contemporary and modern style in the wines; as well as improvement efforts that include soil studies to identify different plots and their separate vinification and aging, determining where the highest quality grapes are found.
The goal of Bodegas Marqués del Atrio is to design wines that reflect the terroir, and to achieve this, they focus on a minimally interventionist winemaking approach. The winery owns 20 hectares of vineyards surrounding its facilities and is supplied by an additional 900 controlled hectares. For its Marqués de Atrio range, it uses old bush vines located on slopes with poor, very stony soils, ideal for ensuring the plants do not express excessive vigor.
