Somontano

Somontano

The Denomination of Origin Somontano was founded in 1984 and encompasses the production of wines in 43 municipalities located in the Somontano region (Huesca), around the town of Barbastro. This denomination has been characterized since its inception by its innovative approach and the introduction of international grape varieties, such as chardonnay, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon. A total of 15 grape varieties are accepted, with red varieties being predominant in the vineyards.

Under the D.O. Somontano, white, rosé, and red wines are produced. The most notable whites are those made with chardonnay grapes. As for the reds, the standouts are those made with international grapes, sometimes blended with local varieties. Traditional reds made with local grapes such as moristel, tempranillo, and parraleta can also be found.
