Rueda

Rueda

The D.O. Rueda extends across the southern area of the province of Valladolid (53 municipalities), the western part of Segovia (17 municipalities), and the northern part of Ávila (4 municipalities), in a region influenced by the Duero River. White wines are the most characteristic of the denomination, primarily made with the native verdejo grape. The French-origin grape sauvignon blanc is the second most important white variety.

Established in 1980, the D.O. Rueda was the first denomination recognized in Castilla y León. In recent years, it has experienced significant growth in sales as well as in the number of registered vineyard hectares.

Climate
Extreme continental climate, with very cold and long winters, short springs with late frosts, and very hot summers. Rainfall is scarce throughout the year, with occasional heavy storms.
Soil
The D.O. is located in the Duero River basin, with predominantly pebbly soils on the surface, poor in organic matter and with good aeration and drainage. The soils are mainly sandy-silty and silty, rich in calcium, magnesium, and other micro-elements.
