G.H.Mumm is one of the largest and most prestigious Champagne houses in the world. Although its official foundation dates back to 1827, the origins of the Mumm family, a German dynasty that created the maison, go back to the 12th century, and by 1761 they already owned a vast area of vineyards in the Rhine Valley, where they produced and marketed their own wines.
At the beginning of the 19th century, attracted by the commercial potential of the fantastic sparkling wines from the French region of Champagne, the brothers Gottlieb, Jacobus, and Philipp Mumm decided to open a branch of the family business in Reims. The highest quality was the hallmark of the company from the very beginning, a principle that, years later, would be embodied in the motto “Only the best,” coined by George Hermann Mumm, the son of one of the founders who, in 1852, took over the management of the company. From that moment on, it became globally known as G.H. Mumm.
Under his leadership, the maison saw its estate vineyard grow and consolidate (currently 218 hectares, 98% classified as Grands Crus) as one of the finest in the region; and its select champagnes were marketed across five continents. At the beginning of the 20th century, the company had around twenty subsidiaries located in countries such as the United States, Russia, Canada, Brazil, and Peru. Among Georges Hermann Mumm's most notable creations is the famous Cordon Rouge, first introduced to society in 1875, which today remains the symbol of G.H. Mumm's quality and sophistication. In 1904, it was appointed the official champagne supplier to the British royal household, an honor commemorated with a special label proclaiming it the “Champagne des Souverains,” the champagne of sovereigns. Today, the company is owned by the Pernod Ricard group and continues to be synonymous with utmost exclusivity and elegance.
