Rías Baixas

Rías Baixas

The D.O. Rías Baixas (1988) is located in the southwestern part of the province of Pontevedra and comprises five subzones: Val do Salnés, Condado do Tea, O Rosal, Soutomaior, and Ribeira do Ulla. The Val do Salnés subzone is the main production area, accounting for more than 50% of the surface and 70% of the winegrowers.

The variety that brings worldwide fame to this designation of origin is the white albariño: albariño production represents 96% of the total production. Reds and sparkling wines are very minor.

Climate
Atlantic type, with mild temperatures and not very marked thermal differences between day and night. High humidity (which decreases inland, in the Condado de Tea) and abundant rainfall that decreases in summer.
Soil
Sandy, shallow, and slightly acidic soils, which are ideal for the production of quality wines. Five subzones are distinguished: Val do Salnés, stronghold of Albariño with Cambados as its center, characterized by flatter terrain compared to the rest and soils composed of gravel, sand, and clay; Condado do Tea, located in the southern part of the province, with a more mountainous character; O Rosal, a warmer subzone situated to the right of the Miño estuary; Soutomaior, named after the municipality of the same name, where only single-varietal Albariño wines are produced; Ribeira do Ulla, around the Ulla river basin, where granite-derived soils are abundant and red wines are predominantly produced.
