Marqués de Vargas

Marqués de Vargas

Bodegas y Viñedos Marqués de Vargas is a firm that faithfully inherits the legacy of a winemaking saga linked to wine since 1840, when Felipe de la Mata, the eighth Marqués de Vargas, carried out the first plantings of vitis vinifera near Logroño. In 1989, one of his heirs, Pelayo de la Mata, the current Marqués de Vargas, definitively changed the family's winemaking direction and committed to the creation of a winery dedicated to producing small batches of high-quality wines. This is how Bodegas y Viñedos Marqués de Vargas was born, located in the heart of Rioja, on the outskirts of Logroño, with a style reminiscent of French ‘châteaux,’ surrounded by a splendid vineyard.

A 70-hectare vineyard cultivated on poor clay-limestone soils, where traditional native grapes of the D.O.Ca. Rioja such as tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, and graciano dominate, but where there is also space, to a lesser extent, for other experimental varieties. The vines are subjected to very controlled yields, so that each hectare of vineyard produces between 4,000 and 5,000 kilograms of the highest quality grapes in the service of their refined wines.

Over the years, other wineries have joined this original one, forming the Grupo Vinícola Marqués de Vargas, composed of this firm, Pazo San Mauro (D.O. Rías Baixas), and Conde de San Cristóbal (D.O. Ribera del Duero).
