Bodegas Gerardo Méndez

In the heart of Salnés, at the foot of A Armenteira and its monastery, Gerardo Méndez works tirelessly in the Casa Grande, which houses one of the wineries that has brought great prestige to the Rías Baixas Denomination of Origin. There, surrounded by five hectares of albariño—the highest vineyard in the entire D.O., with some vines being two centuries old—this winemaker crafts true gems under the Do Ferreiro brand.

Although there are records showing that wine was already being produced at the Casa Grande in the mid-19th century, Gerardo Méndez officially founded his winery in 1973 and began producing his splendid albariños from pre-phylloxera vines over 200 years old. In 1986, Gerardo played an active role in the founding of the C.R.D.O Rías Baixas and decided to label his wine with the name Do Ferreiro because in Galicia, it was known as “the wine of the blacksmith’s son.” In just a few years, this wine has entered the annals of winemaking history as one of the best white wines in the world.
