Bodega Antonio Rey Abelenda

Anyone who thinks that Rías Baixas wine has lost its artisanal character is completely mistaken. There are still craftsmen of Albariño like Antonio Rey Abelenda, a local winemaker who only produces his wine, Pescavella, when the quality of the grapes is exceptional. If not, he sells the fruit to other wineries in the area – some very well-known – that know exactly where to source the best raw material.

In the mid-eighties, Antonio Rey Abelenda decided to plant almost three hectares of Albariño on a family estate. Thirteen years later, he planted another four, and some time after that, he decided to make wine instead of selling all the grapes. The result was spectacular. Since then, this winemaker from Villagarcía de Arousa produces his Pescavella whenever he feels like it, meaning when he knows it will be an exceptional wine. For this, he uses a rented winery in Cambados, where he vinifies a number of bottles that varies greatly depending on the vintage. It could be twenty, thirty, or one hundred thousand bottles, but always with the certainty that they will be of unsurpassable quality.
