Basa 2025 is a white wine produced by the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez in the Rueda Denomination of Origin. This coupage of the verdejo (90%) and viura (10%) varieties is recognized as one of the pioneers in showcasing the expressiveness of the verdejo grape variety, adapting to a continental climate. The result is a direct, fresh, and expressive wine.

In 1996, the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez went to Rueda to produce a good white wine. The hills with stony and lime-rich soils in the Valladolid villages of La Seca, Serrada, Pozaldez, and Foncastín, combined with the high quality of the verdejo variety in this area, were essential ingredients to achieve the winery's goal: to create a great Spanish white wine. The result after 20 years of work is this Basa 2025.

The Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez was founded in 1994, when Pablo Eguzkiza and Telmo Rodríguez decided to join forces to produce a wine made from garnacha from old vines in Navarra, which they named Alma. That was the seed of what the winery is today, with a philosophy focused on making wines from native varieties of different original regions of the country, and this Basa is a fine example in Rueda. Another aspiration of the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez is to work on the recovery of forgotten vineyards.

As is customary with Telmo Rodríguez, its production involves traditional, reasoned agriculture, with bush pruning techniques and cordon royat training. A portion of the grapes is harvested manually, while another portion is harvested mechanically, depending on the different areas of the D.O. Rueda. Subsequently, the must is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks for several months before being marketed and bottled. Basa 2025 is ideal to pair with tempura dishes, oily fish, sushi, stews, grilled white fish, and seafood.

Tasting notes

The white wine Basa displays a straw yellow color, clean and bright.

Medium-high intense nose, it presents aromas of fresh and tropical fruit, citrus, and hints of wild herbs.

On the palate, it is fresh, with plenty of fruitiness, good acidity, and a finish of good persistence, where a certain bitterness stands out.

The winery

The winery of the Compañía de Telmo Rodríguez is located on a beautiful estate in Rioja Alavesa called Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri, in the municipal district of Labastida. An estate with a rich history. It has evolved from being part of a medieval settlement in the 10th century to a farm run by Hieronymite monks in the 14th century. However, it was in 1968 when a couple, Jaime Rodríguez and Amaya Hernandorena, acquired the estate. During this period, they opted for a more modern and fruit-forward style of wine, quite different from the classic Rioja of the time.

Today, the estate is managed by the second generation, led by the couple's son, Telmo Rodríguez, who, far from settling into the family winery, decided to study and train in Bordeaux and establish his own brand. With it, he produces wines from indigenous varieties in various unique regions of Spain's geography: Rioja, Rueda, Cigales, Toro, Ribera del Duero, Alicante… to name a few. Another of the proposals of the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez is to focus particularly on the recovery of forgotten vineyards.

Telmo Rodríguez, together with his friend and partner, Pablo Eguzquiza, has been working the vineyard since 1992. During this time, they have produced special terroir-driven wines that manage to express a modern and natural character from historical vineyards. One of Telmo Rodríguez's guiding principles is to preserve and care for the taste of the region because, according to the winemaker, it had been lost over the past decades: “poor viticulture loses the taste of the place.”
