The D.O. Terra Alta (Tarragona) is located in the south of Catalonia, between the Ebro River and the border with Aragón. A territory with a winemaking tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, with a complex orography, surrounded by different mountains and crossed by small valleys. It is characterized by its high-altitude vineyards situated on natural terraces with limestone soils, conditions that give its wines a distinct personality. The vineyards are cultivated under dry farming conditions. The region is known for its cold winters and very hot summers, with low rainfall. Two winds dominate: the Cierzo and the “Garbí.” The former is dry and warm, coming from inland; the latter is humid and fresh, coming from the sea. The combination of both creates ideal conditions for grape ripening.
The traditional and emblematic varieties of the area are garnacha tinta, garnacha blanca, and garnacha tintorera.
