Lafou de Batea 2018 is one of the fascinating signature wines crafted by Lafou Celler, a winery belonging to the Roqueta family, a renowned Catalan winemaking lineage. The Tarragona-based company is well-known for its expertise with Garnacha, the queen grape of the D.O. Terra Alta. Specifically, the red and peluda varieties, with a touch of Cariñena, share the spotlight in this red wine, originating from vineyards aged between 50 and 70 years at Finca Mas Gabrielet, in Batea.
To produce Lafou de Batea, Lafou Celler carried out a manual harvest of the grapes, which were swiftly chilled in a cold chamber upon arrival at the winery, before destemming. Fermentation in small open stainless steel tanks, parcel-based vinification, and a meticulous 12-month aging process in oak barrels and concrete eggs resulted in a red wine with great aromatic complexity, freshness, a long finish, and the potential for extended bottle aging.
Named Winemaker of the Year in 2016 by the Catalan Association of Sommeliers, Ramón Roqueta Segalés is the figurehead of Lafou Celler, his most personal project and one of the four wineries of the Roqueta Origen family group, which he also leads. Founded in 2007 in the municipality of Batea (Tarragona), the company boasts cutting-edge technology, and its wines, under the D.O. Terra Alta, are a true reflection of this region.
Deep cherry red color.
On the nose, it offers a wide array of aromatic sensations. Initially, nuances of red fruit, raw hazelnut, sun-dried tomato, and balsamic memories of undergrowth appear, later evolving into notes of plum and black olive.
The complexity on the nose is mirrored on the palate, with a fresh entry that evokes fruit, a certain acidity that balances the sweetness of Garnacha, and a prolonged finish where hints of cocoa and wet stone stand out.
Lafou Celler (2007) is the personal project of Ramón Roqueta Segalés, heir to a lineage connected to the wine world for over ten generations and founder in 1898 of Bodegas Ramón Roqueta, one of the most authentic and long-standing wineries in Catalonia.
Lafou Celler is located in the main square of the municipality of Batea (Tarragona), in a restored old manor house, and is equipped with the most advanced technology. Its wines, protected under the D.O. Terra Alta, are a true reflection of this region.
