It encompasses areas of the province of Navarra that are very diverse, featuring five subzones that produce wines with particular and well-differentiated characteristics.
Climate
In the low mountain areas, a dry sub-humid climate predominates, with moderate rainfall. Transitional climate in the Ribera Alta area and more arid in the Ribera Baja, where rainfall decreases.
Soil
There are 5 subzones, with noticeable differences between the soils of the various regions. In Baja Montaña (northeast of Navarra), the soil is stony and calcareous. In Tierra Estella (western central Navarra) and Valdizarbe (central Navarra), the soils are brown-calcareous and calcareous over variegated marls. In Ribera Alta (around the area of Olite), calcareous marls are abundant, and in Ribera Baja (south of the province), the soils are greyish-brown sub-desert in the southern part and brown-calcareous in the northern part.
