The origins of J. Chivite Family Estates date back to August 1647, as confirmed by an official document from that year. Since then, eleven generations of this Navarrese family have been dedicated to producing exceptional wines. Today, nearly four centuries later, the winery is at its peak and belongs to the Perelada group under the name Perelada & Chivite.
Finca Legardeta Garnacha 2019 and Finca Legardeta Garnacha 2020 come from the estate that gives them their name, located southwest of the city of Pamplona. There, the winery has 103 hectares of vineyards situated at an average altitude of 450 meters above sea level, in a transitional area between the Pyrenees and the Ebro basin. These are two fresh and elegant wines, largely thanks to the contrast between daytime and nighttime temperatures.
These are two very different vintages. Both are of excellent quality, but the 2020 vintage is more intense and powerful, and has also been rated as Excellent by the Regulatory Council of the D.O. Navarra. For this reason, Finca Legardeta Garnacha 2020 has a longer aging period than Finca Legardeta Garnacha 2019, 14 months compared to 10. In any case, this is a unique opportunity to enjoy a vertical tasting of two exceptional Garnachas.
Finca Legardeta Garnacha 2019 has an intense and pleasant nose, with aromas of red fruit alongside floral, spicy, and red caramel notes. On the palate, it is balanced, flavorful, elegant, subtle, with aromatic depth and integrated silky tannins. Its finish is long and persistent.
On the other hand, Finca Legardeta Garnacha 2020 has a complex and intense nose with a mineral character alongside spicy and black fruit notes. With good structure and balance on the palate, it is broad, flavorful, with noble tannins, fruity character, and good acidity. It has plenty of life ahead.
It is impossible to talk about Navarre wine without mentioning Chivite, the quintessential winery of Navarra and an icon of family tradition. The origins of J. Chivite Family Estates date back to 1647. Since then, this family lineage has been dedicated to winemaking, becoming one of the most important wineries in the country.
Chivite sources its grapes from the 103 hectares of vineyards at Finca Legardeta, located in Villatuerta, in a transitional area between the Pyrenees and the Ebro River Basin, at an average altitude of 450 m. A very undulating estate, divided into plots with different orientations and soil compositions, which provides the winery with great versatility in winemaking.
Chivite has been a pioneering winery in several aspects: it was one of Spain's first exporters, in 1860, when Claudio Chivite began selling wine to Bordeaux. It was also one of Spain's first bottlers: the year was 1956. In 1985, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the first export to Bordeaux, Chivite launched the wine 125 Aniversario Gran Vino 1981, the origin of its renowned Colección 125 range.
In 2017, the Grupo Peralada acquired the Chivite Group, which includes this winery of the same name, along with Bodegas Gran Feudo and Viña Salceda. Julián Chivite López, the eleventh generation of the family, remains connected to the winery, serving as President.
