General Information

This vegan Reserva is a masterful blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes cultivated in 25-year-old trellised vineyards. Its name is a tribute to the year 1423, when Carlos de Viana, heir to the Navarrese and Aragonese crowns, received the title of Prince of Viana, after which the winery is named. The Garnacha grapes, which thrive in sandy loam soils with pebbles, contribute maturity and flavours of fresh red fruit to the wine. In contrast, the Tempranillo grapes come from clay loam soils with limestone marl and are responsible for its notes of ripe red and black fruit.

Making Príncipe de Viana 1423 Reserva 2019 is an exercise in precision: the grapes were harvested by hand at night to preserve their freshness, then semi-frozen, sorted on a table and cold macerated. Alcoholic fermentation was carried out with selected native yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels. The process ended with 15 months of ageing in French oak and 24 months in the bottle to achieve perfect harmony.

Founded in 1983, Príncipe de Viana has established itself as one of the most influential wineries in the D.O. Navarra, with more than 400 hectares of its own vineyards and many more under its control.

Príncipe de Viana 1423 Reserva 2019 is the ideal accompaniment to grilled meats and mature cheeses.

The winery

Bodegas Príncipe de Viana

Founded in 1983, Bodegas Príncipe de Viana is the great winemaking powerhouse of Navarra, a Denomination of Origin that has earned respect not only for its rosés but also for its aged reds and some high-quality whites. The range of wines from the Murchante winery (and since 2004 also from Cadreita), led by its 1423 Reserva, is a good example of this: it includes more than a dozen references made with a variety of grapes ranging from Garnacha and Syrah to Tempranillo, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, or Sauvignon Blanc.

The numbers of Príncipe de Viana are impressive, and rightly so. Few wineries are capable of producing ten million bottles a year to be enjoyed in more than twenty countries. This success is rooted in an absolute respect for the land of origin and the grape varieties cultivated there, not to mention the interest in experimenting with varieties that may not have as much tradition in the area.
The brand also owns two other wineries in Rioja (Rioja Vega) and Navarra (Finca Albret).
