In San Andrés de Montejos-Ponferrada (León), Aurelio Feo inherited vineyards from his winemaking ancestors. With these century-old vineyards on clay and stony soils (including vines planted in 1910), he used to make wine for personal consumption, just as his ancestors did. In 2011, Aurelio decided to make this work the focus of his life and, together with his wife and his children Adrián and Noelia, founded a winery that remains based in the family home but now produces 12,000 bottles annually.
In the winery, located in the garage of the house, you’ll find artisanal machinery and the smallest and most charming barrel room in Bierzo, with a maximum of 40 barrels, mostly French oak. Here, he crafts the fruit of his 5 hectares of vineyards, 90% of which are planted with Bierzo’s flagship grape: mencía. Currently, the winery produces a total of 12,000 bottles annually, divided among its four labels: the red wines Buencomiezo, Montelios, and Cruz de San Andrés, and the godello white wine Collage. These wines are deeply connected to the terroir. As Adrián, Aurelio’s son, points out, “it’s not necessary to make the best wine in the world, but rather authentic wines for the world.” Mission accomplished.
