The Estévez family, originally from Valtuille de Abajo and partially established in Mexico since 1942, always dreamed of returning to their roots and reclaiming the vineyards in El Bierzo that the libertarian, writer, and thinker Antonio Estévez had to abandon during the Spanish Civil War to exile in this American country. These vineyards represented a centuries-old legacy, whose origin traces back to the first vineyards that great-grandfather Ramón purchased with the money he earned working in Brazil at the end of the 19th century. Years later, Helios Estévez, the youngest son of Antonio, now a businessman and poet, emigrated to Mexico to meet his father, where he settled and started a family; but he always longed to return to El Bierzo.
Currently, Helios's four children have joined the family business. The winery owns 15 hectares of bush-trained vines planted on slopes at an altitude of around 500 m, and it controls an additional 15 hectares. The average age of the vineyard is 90 years, and it is located on sandy and clay soils in the higher areas. The family is committed to environmentally respectful farming and winemaking with minimal human intervention, vinifying each plot separately.
