When we talk about Portuguese wines, the famous Douro region is likely to come to mind, a continuation of the Spanish Duero beyond the border. A region steeped in history and glory, which in 1756 was established as the world's first appellation of origin. Fantastic reds are produced here with local grapes, such as Cerro do Santo Reserva 2017. A thoroughbred, full-bodied, and elegant 'Douro', born from the 2017 vintage, whose low yields produced high-quality, highly concentrated fruit. Aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, it ages well in the bottle.

Cerro do Santo Reserva 2017 is the result of blending five native varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Sousão, and Tinta Cão. The grapes come from sustainable agriculture and come from the 30 hectares that the Quinta do Pégo winery owns in the Cima Corgo area, in the Douro Valley. The 2017 vintage was a year of drought and frost that provided a very low but high-quality production, resulting in reds with concentration and power.
This red was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. It then aged for a period in the bottle before being released.
Quinta do Pégo is a Danish-owned winery, located on the left bank of the Douro River, in the Douro Valley in Portugal. The land of Quinta do Pégo is classified in Group A. After a complete renovation, the winery inaugurated a new phase in 2009. It occupies one of the most beautiful estates in the Douro Valley and also has a Rural Hotel that is well worth a visit. Cerro do Santo is the winery's second wine.
Cerro do Santo Reserva 2017 (D.O.C. Douro) pairs perfectly with lamb dishes such as roasted suckling lamb chops or braised pork cheeks.
Beautiful cherry red color with garnet notes on the rim.
On the nose, it displays intense aromas of red fruits in liqueur (cherries and sour cherries), followed by a balsamic series featuring licorice root and soft menthol notes. Later, notes of toasted cedar blend with spicy hints of clove, ending its aromatic journey with delicate nuances of roasted cocoa.
On the palate, it is flavorful, well-constituted, and well-structured, giving it a full-bodied mid-palate and allowing for a good ageing in the bottle. The aromas of jammy red fruit stand out alongside spicy and balsamic notes. The long, persistent finish is marked by hints of red stone fruit.
The first historical document that mentions Quinta do Pégo dates back to 1548, although it is known that the origin of the estate is earlier. In the 19th century (1825), the estate was purchased in a forced sale by Francisco Da Silva Torres, the second husband of Doña Antonia. The history of the winery concludes in 2003 when it was acquired by the AMKA group.
The Quinta do Pégo winery is located in the Douro region, in the Cima Corgo subregion, very close to Vila do Pinhão. This entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the beauty of the Douro River valley, an idyllic place where manual harvesting takes place at the beginning of September on the steep terraces overlooking the freshwater.
The renowned Portuguese winery in the Douro Valley boasts an internationally prestigious winemaker, Manuel Henrique Da Silva, who, along with his team, crafts elegant wines of the D.O.P. Douro, Port Vintage wines, and Late Bottled Vintage wines from the native varieties touriga nacional, tinto cão, tinta barroca, tinta roriz, sousão, and touriga franca.
In addition to the estate and the winery, Quinta do Pégo features a hotel and a restaurant, perfect for exploring the Douro region, its wines, and its gastronomy.
