Blecua

Just over ten years have been enough for Viñas del Vero, the leading winery of the Somontano Denomination of Origin, whose first wines hit the market in 1990, to bring to life one of its most desired projects: the creation of a winery dedicated to producing its highest-end wine, Blecua. The Blecua estate, more commonly known in the area as the Blecua tower, dates back to the late 11th century, when it was used as a retreat by the French Benedictine monks of Santa Fe de Conques. Its fourteen hectares of land, located in the central part of Somontano, include a beautiful house that Viñas del Vero has restored to construct the winery where its most emblematic wine, Blecua, is produced. Blecua is the result of what we call "the triple selection: of vineyards, grape bunches, and barrels." Viñas del Vero currently owns one of the largest extensions of vineyards in Spain, working with a total of 1,000 hectares, 750 of which belong to the winery. Each year, we select the seven best vineyards from four different grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, and Tempranillo, to establish the foundation of our Blecua. After a meticulous manual harvest, the best grape bunches are selected again at the winery. Subsequently, we begin an artisanal and carefully managed winemaking process that culminates in the selection of the finest barrels from each of these four grape varieties. However, only the barrels that have passed several selection processes through meticulous tastings make up the final Blecua. One of the distinguishing characteristics of Blecua is that each year is different, as only the best barrels of each variety remain throughout the selection processes.
