Dão

The Dão region in Portugal is one of the oldest in the country (there are documents from the 12th century that confirm the economic importance of the wine-producing industry in this region during the Middle Ages and the Christian Reconquest). In 1908, this wine region was granted the designation of Denominação de Origem Controlada (Controlled Designation of Origin). Today, after overcoming the legal monopoly of cooperatives in 1986 (with Portugal's entry into the EU), Dão wines have made a significant qualitative leap, resulting from both meticulous vineyard work and the modernization of wineries; the outcome was immediately reflected in much finer and more elegant wines, whose development has not yet ceased. The region is divided into seven subregions: Alva; Besteiros; Castendo; Serra da Estrela; Silgueiros; Terras de Azurara; Terras de Senhorim.
