Empordà

The D.O. Empordà is located in the northeastern part of the province of Girona and encompasses 55 municipalities distributed across two regions: 35 municipalities in Alt Empordà and 20 municipalities in Baix Empordà.

The main red varieties are garnacha and cariñena. Additionally, the Regulatory Council authorizes the French red varieties cabernet sauvignon, syrah, cabernet franc, and merlot; as well as the national varieties tempranillo, garnacha peluda, and monastrell, the latter with a long history in the area.

Regarding the white varieties, the recommended (main) ones are cariñena blanca, garnacha blanca, garnacha roja, macabeo (or viura), and moscatel de Alejandría. Chardonnay, gewürztraminer, malvasía, moscatel de grano pequeño, picapoll blanco, sauvignon blanc, and xarel·lo are also permitted.

Climate
Climate strongly influenced by the strong northern wind called tramontana. Mild winters with few frosts and hot summers, tempered by sea breezes. The average annual temperature ranges between 14 and 16º C. Rainfall is around 600 mm per year.
Soil
Poor soils, granitic in the mountainous area, alluvial in the plain, and slatey along the coastal strip.
