General Information

Finca Espolla is located in Les Alberes, at the foothills of the Pyrenees, where the black slate soils and the Mediterranean climate with mountain influence create a unique environment. These conditions are key to the concentration, freshness, and balsamic profile that define the character of Perelada Finca Espolla 2021. The coupage combines Mediterranean and Atlantic varieties - syrah, monastrell, garnacha, and samsó - which perfectly adapt to this terroir, offering structure, fruit, and complexity.

The winemaking process begins with a manual harvest, followed by a meticulous selection of bunches to ensure the highest quality. Fermentation takes place in tanks, with temperature control at 22 ºC, and continues with long macerations to extract all the desired color and tannins. Subsequently, the wine rests for 10 months in French oak, using different formats to achieve the perfect balance: 21% in new 300-liter barrels, 44% in 3800-liter foudres, and the remaining 35% in 225-liter barrels. This aging process brings harmony between fruit and wood, without compromising the freshness that characterizes it.

Celler Perelada, a historical reference in Empordà since 1923, combines tradition and innovation. Its commitment to estate wines and sustainable practices places it among the most admired wineries in the world. Finca Espolla is one of its gems: a wine that embodies the philosophy of respect for the landscape and oenological excellence.

Perelada Finca Espolla 2021 is perfect for stews, roasted meats, game dishes, and recipes with intense sauces. It also pairs well with sweet spices and red fruit jams, enhancing its elegant and expressive character.

The winery

Celler Perelada

The production of wine at the Castillo de Perelada has been documented since the Middle Ages. When Miguel Mateu purchased this monumental complex in 1923, one of his main objectives was to revitalize this winemaking tradition, a tradition that is now more alive than ever and has incorporated the most modern technology to produce wines that fully capture the nuances of the soils and vineyards of the Empordà.

It was in the town of Peralada where Miguel Mateu Pla discovered and became passionate about the world of wine, and where he decided to establish the Castillo Perelada winery, reviving a centuries-old tradition that dates back to the 14th century. In the early 1990s, Castillo Perelada decided to focus on producing high-quality wines, what some refer to as high-expression wines. This new approach has materialized through a series of investments in research and development.

This small area of land concentrates a variety of soils found in very few places: slate slopes, sandy plains, fluvial sediment, soils rich in silt and clay, gravel soils... This heterogeneity of terrains allows Castillo de Perelada to harvest grapes with an extensive range of nuances in each vintage, enabling the production of complex wines full of character. It comprises five different estates with a total of 150 hectares.

In 2022, Celler Perelada inaugurated the new winery, conceived by the Suqué Mateu family together with RCR Arquitectes, a Spanish studio that received the Pritzker Prize in 2017, considered the Nobel of Architecture.
