At just 20 years old, Markus Molitor took over the family estate from his father in 1984, when they had only 3 hectares of vineyards.
Although young and inexperienced, Markus had a clear goal: to produce the best rieslings from the Mosel under the name ‘Molitor,’ following the family tradition.
The Markus Molitor winery works with 15 different plots and is located in the heart of the Wehlener Klosterberg vineyards (Germany), overlooking Zeltinge. Its steep vineyards, some with an 80% slope and over 100 years old, are meticulously cultivated by hand. These are the foundation of the incredible Mosel rieslings. Today, Markus Molitor has 38 hectares, making it the largest winery in the middle Mosel.
Markus Molitor's vineyards stretch from Brauneberg to Traben-Trarbach and, since the early 2000s, include the area that covers much of the Saar River. A unique terroir thanks to the diversity of its slate soils and the presence of different microclimates depending on the area.
The winery primarily works with riesling, Weisburgunder (pinot blanc), and Spätburgunder (pinot noir) grape varieties, which are cultivated in selected areas.
The winery produces its wines with spontaneous fermentations, using only native and natural yeasts to preserve the original expression of each plot. The ancient vaulted cellar, carved into the slate itself, provides an ideal, cool, and slightly humid temperature for the wines to ferment very slowly. Additionally, it features stainless steel tanks and large wooden barrels where the wines age extraordinarily well, adding the structure, depth, and character so recognizable in Molitor’s productions.
The exceptional wines of Markus Molitor showcase the potential of the Mosel terroir, wines built on a foundation of structure, fruity character, minerality, and depth of flavor, combined with a unique elegance and freshness.
The great winemaker Markus Molitor embraces family tradition and experience, skillfully combining the ancestral methods of the Mosel
