General Information

Niepoort 20 Years Old Tawny is a red wine resulting from the blending of different wines with an average age of 20 years. Its long aging in old 550-liter oak barrels grants it excellent aromatic complexity, while preserving the freshness of the grape. Sourced from old vineyards along the banks of the Douro River, the grapes that create this wine are hand-harvested and fermented in large granite lagares, with regular treading before barrel aging.

Located in Vila Nova de Gaia, Niepoort owns one of the best vineyards for producing dry and fortified wines in Portugal. With a long winemaking tradition, this is the fifth generation managing the winery, combining tradition and modernity while respecting traditional winemaking adapted to new market tastes.

Niepoort 20 Years Old Tawny is a dessert wine. Its pleasant sweetness is perfect for pairing with caramel, dark chocolates, and vanillas. Even served slightly cooler, it can be a great companion for appetizers with aged cheeses, nuts, and foie.

Tasting notes

Dark tile color with reddish hues.

Very rich in aromas, where notes of candied fruits, orange tones, and dried apricots stand out, perfectly integrated with nuts.

On the palate, it stands out for its structure. A balanced and full-bodied wine where the sensations of dried apricots perceived in the aromatic phase return.

The winery

Winery

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, a Dutchman who emigrated to Portugal with the aim of creating a company that initially focused on the commercialization of Port wines. Gradually, they began producing their own wines by purchasing grapes from small growers, and today they own Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril in Cima Corgo (Douro Valley), renowned for the exceptional quality of their grapes.

With a family tradition, today Eduard Dirk Niepoort and Verena Niepoort represent the fifth generation leading the winery. Their curiosity about the terroir of the Douro has defined Niepoort’s spirit over the last two decades. The acquisition of estate-owned vineyards, respect for indigenous varieties, and vineyard replanting projects have provided this winery with some of the best raw materials for crafting both fortified and unfortified wines.
