The winner of a gold medal at Mundus Vini, Marqués de Valparaíso Crianza 2019, comes from a year that was rated Excellent in the D.O. Ribera del Duero and looks set to become historic. This means that it’s going to get harder and harder to find great wines from this year, especially ones as good as this red, designed by Rubén Provedo, a winemaker with experience at top wineries like Tobelos and Numanthia

Marqués de Valparaíso Crianza 2019, made wholly from Tempranillo grapes, comes from old vines with an average age of over 30, planted in clay-loam soils that afford the wines body and structure. Vinification took place using the traditional system: destemming and macerating the must in contact with the skins. It underwent fermentation at an average temperature of 26º C. The resulting wine was aged for 12 months in American and French oak barrels.
Bodegas Valparaíso started out in 2000 in Quintana del Pidio (Burgos). The facilities are located on a hill from which the village is visible, and are supplied by 70 hectares of vines owned by the firm, chiefly Tempranillo, part of which date from the nineteenth century and are gobelet trained.
This old vineyard is close to the winery in Quintana del Pidio, whereas the newer, espalier-trained plots are located in another of the most highly valued parts of the Denominación: in Pesquera (Valladolid), at an altitude of 925 m; and in Sotillo (Burgos), at 825 m. The grapes from each vineyard were fermented separately and were blended just before ageing began. The barrels are made of French (25%) and American (75%) oak.
Marqués de Valparaíso Crianza 2019 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal with game stews such as venison hotpot or quail with beans.
Cherry-red with subtle ruby-red hues. Notes of red fruits, cedar and spices appear in the nose together with perfectly integrated aromas from ageing. Highly aromatic on mid-palate. Elegant.
Bodegas Valparaíso was founded with the idea of creating modern and high-quality wines. For this reason, production is kept at a very low volume, aiming to produce authentic wines from Ribera del Duero. The winery has the capacity to produce 300,000 bottles annually.
Its journey began in the year 2000 in Quintana del Pidio (Burgos). The facilities are located on a hill overlooking the village and are supplied by 60 hectares of their own vineyards, mostly planted with tempranillo, some of which date back to the early 20th century and are planted in goblet style.
This old vineyard is located near the winery in Quintana del Pidio, while the new trellised vineyards are found in some of the most highly regarded areas of the appellation: in Pesquera (Valladolid) at an altitude of 925 m, and in Sotillo (Burgos) at 825 m. The grapes from each vineyard ferment separately, and the blending is done at the beginning of the aging process. In the barrel room, French oak (25%) and American oak (75%) coexist.
