General Information

Finca San Martín Crianza 2021, 100% tempranillo, originates from a selection of vineyards owned by the winery and distributed on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria at an average altitude of 600 m: Vallecilla, Camino de Laguardia, San Martín I, and San Martín II. The vines grow in well-drained limestone soils, which provide grapes with aromatic intensity and freshness.

Manual harvest and transported in boxes. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in tanks, it aged for 16 months in new American oak barrels of own production (60%) and French oak barrels of two wines (40%). During this aging period, 3 traditional rackings were performed, by candlelight, from barrel to barrel to manually separate the sediments and avoid aggressive filtration.

Torre de Oña is the winery owned by La Rioja Alta, S.A. in Páganos, one of the best areas of Rioja Alavesa. It specializes in the production of Reservas and Grandes Reservas and rests in the center of a silent sea of vineyards, in the style of a 'French château'. The winery is located in a wonderful landscape sheltered by the Sierra de Cantabria. It currently has 47 hectares of tempranillo vineyards and some mazuelo, divided into three well-differentiated areas.

Finca San Martín Crianza 2021 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is perfect to accompany Iberian starters, cured meats, and medium-aged cheeses; it also pairs well with substantial first courses and meats in general.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Torre de Oña

Torre de Oña was the great dream of Leandro Vázquez, a businessman of Cuban origin and a great wine enthusiast who, in 1985, acquired 15 hectares of vineyards in Páganos (Álava), a locality belonging to the municipality of Laguardia. Three years later, he built the winery, and in 1995, he decided to sell the firm – which by then already owned 45 hectares of vineyards – to the La Rioja Alta, S.A. Group, which has maintained the winemaking philosophy of its founder.

Since La Rioja Alta, S.A. acquired Torre de Oña, the winery has continued growing in every sense. They currently have 65 hectares of vineyards, and the facilities have been expanded. They also restored the 17th-century Ermita de Santiago, located within the estate. In terms of winemaking, the recruitment of Julio Sáenz further increased the quality of the wines and led to the creation of a new and striking reference: Finca San Martín.

Torre de Oña rests at the center of a silent sea of vineyards, in the style of a French château. Entering the facilities is a pleasure, passing through the wrought-iron gate and admiring the neoclassical façade of its mansion and, beside it, the ashlar winery.
