Quality assured is the motto of one of the most important Spanish winemaking groups: Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. We’re focusing on their winery in the D.O. Toro, where they make Cyan Crianza 2019, an organic red with a fresher, lighter and fruitier profile than the region’s traditional wines and a 12-month stint in oak that lends it complexity and elegance. It’s won a whole string of awards, such as gold medals at the Brussels Concours Mondiale, Mundus Vini and the Berliner Wine Trophy.

Cyan Crianza 2019 is made entirely from Tinta de Toro grapes from a selection of vines that grow on Finca La Calera, an estate in Valdefinjas, west of the D.O. Toro, in the coolest part of the area. La Calera is home to old, organic, gobelet-trained vines planted between 1943 and 2005. The sandy-loam soil with limestone outcrops is very uncommon in the Toro area and lends the wines a particular freshness. The grapes were fermented for 10 to 14 days in stainless steel tanks (26ºC). The wine was finally aged for 12 months in French and American barrels.
Belonging to the Bodegas Famliares Matarromera group, Bodegas Cyan (1999) is one of the cutting-edge firms of the D.O. Toro, and has earned the approval of national and international critics. It’s located on the road connecting Toro with Venialbo, just past the municipality of Valdefinjas, and its wines are modern and fresh. The facilities consist of three buildings: one partly underground, where the wines are aged, and the other two on top of a hill, from where the vineyards are visible. Cyan owns some of the best vineyards of the native Tinta de Toro variety.
Cyan Crianza 2019 (D.O. Toro) is ideal with pigs’ trotters stuffed with wild mushrooms or roasted lamb chops.
Very deep crimson with bright bluish hues.
Intense, expressive nose with fresh aromas of red and black fruit such as plum, cherry, blackberry and strawberry and elegant tertiary aromas from barrel ageing such as coffee, spices, dairy and liquorice.
Very expressive palate with a moderate acidity that lends it freshness. Lingering aromas similar to those of the nose, and the same sensations of fresh fruit, coffee, liquorice, wood and dark-roasting.
The entrepreneur Carlos Moro founded Matarromera (D.O. Ribera del Duero) in 1988, a winery that achieved resounding success. Following this, the formation and expansion of the Matarromera Group began, which today is one of the most important wine empires in the country. Bodega Cyan (D.O. Toro) has been part of its successful portfolio of wineries since 1999.
Cyan drives the renewal and the great qualitative leap of the wines from D.O. Toro. A winery committed to making the most of some of the best vineyards of the native Tinta de Toro grape. It has 53 hectares of vineyards cultivated along the axis of the Valdefinjas valley, in one of the most coveted areas of the region, boasting a high percentage of old vines, the most valuable ones.
Following the model of the prestigious reds from Matarromera, Bodegas Cyan began a renewal in the style of its wines in 2010. A fresh approach to achieve more harmonious and balanced reds, with less presence of oak and greater elegance, focusing on meticulous vineyard care, precision winemaking, and aging in the finest barrels. We explore some of the best wines from the winery and complete the offering with two extra virgin olive oils produced in the group’s mill.
