Château Pontet-Canet

Located in the heart of Pauillac, Château Pontet-Canet is a winery that achieved the rank of Fifth Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification.

Only three families have owned the château since 1705, when Jean-Francois de Pontet, royal governor of the Médoc, purchased several plots of land north of Pauillac to establish a vineyard. Years later, his descendants added more parcels from a site called Canet to the estate, thus giving rise to the name by which it has been known ever since.

In 1865, Herman Cruse, one of the most prominent négociants in Bordeaux at the time, acquired the winery, which remained in his family’s hands for 110 years. In 1975, cognac merchant Guy Tesseron purchased Château Pontet-Canet, and today it is managed by his descendants, Alfred and Melanie Tesseron, uncle and niece, respectively. Over the years, the Tesseron family has been responsible for the improvement and renewal of the vineyard and winery, positioning the estate as a benchmark in this wine region.

The Château Pontet-Canet vineyard spans a total of 81 hectares. Its gravel soils over limestone rock provide the perfect conditions for cultivating cabernet sauvignon, the estate’s predominant variety (62%). This is followed by merlot (32%), with the remaining 6% divided between cabernet franc and petit verdot. All vines are tended according to the principles of organic and biodynamic viticulture, and in recent years, traditional practices such as horse plowing have also been introduced.

The commitment to more precise techniques results in energetic Pauillac wines that express tension and intensity. These are fleshy, elegant, seductive, and refined reds, fantastic representatives of the left bank of the Gironde.
