General Information

Respect for nature and tradition, along with a passion for precision and meticulousness in all production processes, are embodied in the Grand Cru Classé Château Pontet-Canet 2021, the exceptional grand vin of the winery founded in the 18th century by the then-governor of Médoc, Jean-Francois de Pontet.

From the 81 hectares of vineyards, located in Pauillac on gravel soils with a limestone base, come the fruits of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, and petit verdot vines, with an average age of 45 years, used to produce Château Pontet-Canet 2021. After fermentation in cement and stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures, this French red wine underwent aging of 16 to 22 months in new French oak barrels, 60% of which were new.

Only three families, a rather uncommon occurrence in Bordeaux, have owned Château Pontet-Canet since its founding in 1705. Currently, and since the winery was purchased in 1975 by the cognac merchant Guy Tesseron, the Tesseron family has been at the helm. Under their leadership, the vineyard and winemaking facilities have been renewed, which has strongly contributed to further consolidating its dominant position among Médoc wines.

Tasting notes

In appearance, it shows a beautiful purple color.

On the nose, aromas of forest fruits and spices predominate, with a touch of graphite.

On the palate, the attack is flavorful, and its evolution is dense and rich. With comforting and pleasant freshness, it offers a sensation equivalent to biting into a fleshy bunch of grapes.

The winery

Located in the heart of Pauillac, Château Pontet-Canet is a winery that achieved the rank of Fifth Grand Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification.

Only three families have owned the château since 1705, when Jean-Francois de Pontet, royal governor of the Médoc, purchased several plots of land north of Pauillac to establish a vineyard. Years later, his descendants added more parcels from a site called Canet to the estate, thus giving rise to the name by which it has been known ever since.

In 1865, Herman Cruse, one of the most prominent négociants in Bordeaux at the time, acquired the winery, which remained in his family’s hands for 110 years. In 1975, cognac merchant Guy Tesseron purchased Château Pontet-Canet, and today it is managed by his descendants, Alfred and Melanie Tesseron, uncle and niece, respectively. Over the years, the Tesseron family has been responsible for the improvement and renewal of the vineyard and winery, positioning the estate as a benchmark in this wine region.

The Château Pontet-Canet vineyard spans a total of 81 hectares. Its gravel soils over limestone rock provide the perfect conditions for cultivating cabernet sauvignon, the estate’s predominant variety (62%). This is followed by merlot (32%), with the remaining 6% divided between cabernet franc and petit verdot. All vines are tended according to the principles of organic and biodynamic viticulture, and in recent years, traditional practices such as horse plowing have also been introduced.

The commitment to more precise techniques results in energetic Pauillac wines that express tension and intensity. These are fleshy, elegant, seductive, and refined reds, fantastic representatives of the left bank of the Gironde.
