The D.O. Valle de la Orotava was established in 1995 and is located in the north of the island of Tenerife, bordered to the west by the D.O. Ycoden-Daute-Isora and to the east by the D.O. Tacoronte-Acentejo.
The D.O. Valle de la Orotava encompasses around 340 hectares of vineyards that grow in the valley at the foot of Mount Teide and extend down to the sea. It includes the municipalities of La Orotava, Los Realejos, and Puerto de La Cruz. In La Orotava, red wines are predominantly produced, while in the Los Realejos area, white wines are more common. Rosé wines are also made in this D.O.
The D.O. Valle de la Orotava cultivates a wide range of native grape varieties, with the most prominent being listán blanco and listán negro, and a significant proportion of century-old vines. Additionally, this region employs a unique vine training system found nowhere else in the world: the braided multiple cordon.
