José María Ruiz is the owner of the renowned Restaurante José María in Segovia. In the late 1980s, he founded, along with a group of wine enthusiasts, a winery in Peñafiel (Valladolid) to produce an exceptional red wine to serve in his establishment. The result was Pago de Carraovejas (D.O. Ribera del Duero), a winery that quickly gained great prestige. Pago de Carraovejas is, in fact, the origin of Alma Carraovejas, a brand that encompasses other wineries in different designations of origin: Ossian Vides y Vinos (V.T. Castilla y León), Viña Meín–Emilio Rojo (D.O. Ribeiro), Milsetentayseis (D.O. Ribera del Duero), Aiurri (D.O.Ca. Rioja), and Bodega Marañones (D.O. Vinos de Madrid); as well as the Ambivium restaurant.
Currently, Pedro Ruiz Aragoneses (pictured), son of José María, is the general manager of the company. Alma Carraovejas aspires to be recognized as one of Spain's leading names worldwide for the quality and variety of its wines and its carefully curated gastronomic offerings.
