The D.O.C. Friuli Colli Orientali (or D.O.C. Colli Orientali del Friuli) is located in a territory that includes the hilly area of the province of Udine, near the border with Slovenia and Austria. To the north, it encompasses the municipalities of Tarcento, Nimis, Povoletto, Attimis, and Faedis. In the eastern area, you will find the localities of San Pietro al Natisone, Prepotto, Premariacco, Buttrio, Manzano, San Giovanni al Natisone, and Corno di Rosazzo.
The designation, established in 1970, stretches along a chain of hills at the edge of the Udine plain, from Buttrio in the south to Tarcento in the north. The vineyards, mostly arranged in terraces, extend over 2,100 hectares cultivated on calcareous marl and sandstone soils at an altitude ranging between 100 and 350 meters above sea level. This location, close to the Julian Prealps, protects the area from cold northern winds, while the gentle breezes from the Adriatic Sea create an ideal microclimate for vine cultivation.
The wines produced in the eastern hills of Friuli are of extraordinary quality. This is due to a very rich terroir, thanks to the combination of soil, climate, and grape variety. The favorable climatic conditions have allowed the cultivation of native vines in Colli Orientali since ancient times, as well as the adaptation of some international varieties.
The D.O.C. Colli Orientali del Friuli has four subzones: Subzone of Refosco di Faedis, Subzone of Cialla, Subzone Schioppettino di Prepotto, Subzone Ribolla Gialla, and Pignolo di Rosazzo.
The native vines cultivated in the D.O.C. Friuli Colli Orientali are mostly white grapes, but over the years, red wines of great character and quality have also emerged. The most common grape varieties are malvasia, picolit, pignolo, refosco dal peduncolo rosso, ribolla gialla, sch
