General Information

Fruity and fresh on the nose and juicy and firm on the palate, Ostatu Crianza 2021 reveals itself as one of the most interesting wines in its category from the D.O.Ca. Rioja. The Sáenz de Samaniego family winery crafted this fantastic red wine with selected fruits from their own vineyards, aged between 25 and 50 years, planted at an altitude of 580 meters, in clay-limestone and stony soils.

The age of the vines and their particular location in the Samaniego area give the tempranillo, which leads this blend, complemented with mazuelo, graciano, and garnacha grapes, a unique personality with balsamic notes and spicy touches. These qualities are accentuated after careful aging for 12 months in second-use French oak barrels.

Bodegas Ostatu boasts a long winemaking tradition that dates back to the 16th century. Currently, the firm is managed by four of the six Saénz Samaniego siblings, custodians of a legacy built on exceptional vineyards, the practice of sustainable viticulture, and the pursuit of continuous improvement. With these foundations and from their stately facilities located between Laguardia and Vitoria, they produce wines with their own style such as Ostatu Crianza 2021.

Tasting notes

Ostatu Crianza exhibits an intense cherry red color with purple reflections.

On the nose, very fresh aromas of black and red fruits in brine dominate, followed by balsamic notes, hints of spices, and some toasted nuances.

The palate is juicy with a firm, sleek, and fresh passage. Fruity sensations (blackberries, cherries, red and black plums) with a touch of licorice, dried fruits, fine woodwork, and very light roasted notes. Pleasant and balanced.

The winery

Bodegas Ostatu

The Ostatu winery is located in one of the most emblematic villages of Rioja Alavesa, Samaniego, where the Sáenz family - the owners - have been dedicated to viticulture for several generations. Building on this heritage from their ancestors, the couple formed by Doroteo and Mª Asunción founded the current winery, annexed to an 18th-century manor house built as an inn. Since the year 2000, four of the six children of Doroteo and Mª Asunción (Gonzalo, Ernesto, Mariasun, and Iñigo) have taken over the management of the winery, whose philosophy is based on producing wines from their own vineyards and practicing sustainable viticulture.

Ostatu has more than 30 hectares of its own vineyard, divided into 50 plots. Most of the vineyards are set on highly rugged clay-limestone soils, arranged on slopes, and enjoy a microclimate that favors optimal ripening. Their range of wines is divided into Singular Wines, wines with a distinctive personality crafted from unique plots, such as Gloria de Ostatu or Laderas de Ostatu; and Sensible Wines, featuring young wines and oak-aged wines that follow the tradition of Rioja Alavesa.
