The medium amontillado Osborne Rare Sherry Solera El Cid is a family relic that was initially not marketed, as it was intended for family consumption. With a long tradition and experience in the production of Jerez wines, Bodegas Osborne has preserved a unique collection of foundational soleras from which this Rare Sherry emerges, a jewel that combines the elegance of oloroso with a perfect sweet touch provided by the Pedro Ximénez.

General Information

In the Pago Balbaína, at an altitude of 70 meters, the Palomino Fino grape is born, serving as the base for Osborne Rare Sherry Solera El Cid, a sublime amontillado, vinified in white, made by gently pressing the grape and carrying out fermentation at a controlled temperature of 24ºC. At this precise moment, the wine undergoes biological aging following the traditional system of criaderas and soleras in American oak casks. This process is favored by the unique microclimate in El Puerto de Santa María, where Bodegas Osborne is located. After 4 or 5 years, the wine is fortified with wine alcohol to continue aging as an amontillado, and roughly halfway through the aging process, a blending is performed, incorporating a contribution of Pedro Ximénez that adds a sweet touch to the ensemble.

In 1812, the Osborne family wanted to pay tribute to the enactment of the 1st Spanish Constitution, popularly known as ‘La Pepa,’ by founding ‘La Solera El Cid.’ It is one of the foundational soleras, originating from old soleras of the ancient Duff Gordon wineries.

Osborne RS Solera El Cid (D.O. Jerez-Xérès-Sherry) is an ideal wine to enjoy with all kinds of appetizers, marinated meats, and cured cheeses.

Tasting notes

Color between amber and mahogany, with a well-defined tear.

Nose with the sharp profile of amontillado, featuring notes of old wood, hazelnuts, bitter oranges, a subtle touch of carob, and caramel.

On the palate, it is balanced and harmonious. Its entry is slightly sweet, compensated by a subsequent residual bitterness. Persistent and very long finish.

The winery

With 250 years of history, Bodegas Osborne is one of the most important wine sector business groups in Spain and is internationally recognized for producing high-quality wines. The origins of Osborne date back to the late 18th century (1772), when a young English merchant, Thomas Osborne Mann, arrived in the Cádiz region to trade the finest wines of the area.

Thomas Osborne, originally from Exeter (England), decided to settle in El Puerto de Santa María, where he acquired several wineries to trade Jerez wines. Today, the headquarters of this great business group, which enjoys great fame and international recognition, is located in this Cádiz town. In fact, the group is among the 100 oldest active family businesses in the world.

Generation after generation, the group has demonstrated that its work is synonymous with quality and prestige. It has successfully combined family tradition with technological innovation to produce outstanding and diverse wines.

In its business portfolio, Bodegas Osborne markets wines from the most prestigious regions of the Iberian Peninsula, including Jerez, Oporto, Rioja, Rueda, and Ribera del Duero.

The winery houses the largest selection of old wines from the Marco de Jerez, renowned as VORS (Very Old Rare Sherry) by the Regulatory Council of the Denomination of Origin.

Additionally, in its own wineries, it produces finos, manzanillas, amontillados, olorosos, and sweet wines, all crafted under the D.O. Jerez-Xérès-Sherry and Manzanilla Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

Another highlight is the 1973 acquisition of Bodegas Montecillo, the third-oldest winery in the renowned Rioja region. Similarly, it operates in the areas of Malpica de Tajo and Cádiz under the geographical indications of Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla and Vinos de la Tierra de Cádiz.

But Osborne's empire is not limited to wine. In the 1960s, the advertising campaign for Brandy Veterano became iconic, featuring large roadside billboards across Spain with the now-famous silhouette of the great
