General Information

Oporto Martínez 20 Year Old Tawny is a fine example of the esteemed Portuguese wines in this category. The English term tawny means in Spanish leonado, toasted, or dark amber, and it is used to refer to ports that have been aged for a long time in oak casks (containers with a capacity of between 550 and 600 liters), after blending different vintages.

In the case of this Oporto Martínez 20 Year Old Tawny, as its name suggests, it spent 20 years maturing in wood to acquire the intense aromas of dried fruits and spices, as well as the rich and concentrated palate that characterize it. Behind this meticulous production is Martínez Gassiot, a winery founded in 1790, which today belongs to the prestigious Symington family, a true emblem in Portugal and one of the leading winemaking dynasties in the world.

The winery

Martínez Gassiot is a Port wine-producing winery founded in 1790 by Sebastián González Martínez, a Spaniard who began his journey as a merchant in London. In 1822, he partnered with the Englishman John Peter Gassiot, and in 1834 they purchased their first winery in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Since 2006, the company has been owned by the Symington family, one of the most important and influential dynasties in the world of wine. Born from the finest vineyards of the most famous quintas located along the Douro River, Martínez Gassiot’s Ports are characterized by their unique delicacy.
