Niepoort Tawny is an excellent gateway to discover the world of tawnies. A young wine, resulting from the blend of several vintages, aged an average of 3 years in small old oak barrels.
The grapes selected for the production of this wine come from vineyards with very low yields, located in the Cima Corgo region, in the Douro Valley, where the vineyards are dotted with vines of different grape varieties.
Niepoort is a winery with a long winemaking tradition located in Vila Nova de Gaia. With more than 150 years of history, it currently owns the best vineyards in different Portuguese regions for the production of dry and fortified wines. The winery’s philosophy is simple, respecting traditional production, adapted to the new tastes of the market. This doctrine is the seed of the creation of magnificent wines, like this Niepoort Tawny, a good option to pair with dark chocolate desserts, or with cold appetizers such as foie.
In appearance, it presents a brick red color with brown reflections.
Very subtle nose marked by delicate aromas of dried fruits, such as walnut and cashew.
The palate is balanced, with a fruity character that lingers over time and a long finish.
Niepoort was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, a Dutchman who emigrated to Portugal with the aim of creating a company that initially focused on the commercialization of Port wines. Gradually, they began producing their own wines by purchasing grapes from small growers, and today they own Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril in Cima Corgo (Douro Valley), renowned for the exceptional quality of their grapes.
With a family tradition, today Eduard Dirk Niepoort and Verena Niepoort represent the fifth generation leading the winery. Their curiosity about the terroir of the Douro has defined Niepoort’s spirit over the last two decades. The acquisition of estate-owned vineyards, respect for indigenous varieties, and vineyard replanting projects have provided this winery with some of the best raw materials for crafting both fortified and unfortified wines.
