General Information

In the Penedès, one of the richest and most diverse regions for wine production, lies the La Plana estate, where Bodegas Gramona cultivates one of the oldest xarel•lo vineyards in the area. Settled on clay soils with a sandy substrate, a prelude to limestone rock, these vines produce the selected fruits used to create Gramona Celler Batlle Brut, a sparkling wine of great complexity and smoothness, highly appreciated by both national and international critics.

Since its beginnings in the 19th century, Gramona has based its winemaking philosophy on long aging processes, similar to those of the finest sparkling wines of Champagne. This is the case with this Celler Batlle Brut, which remained on its lees for more than 120 months, more than double the usual time. This aging process represents a unique craftsmanship and research effort both in the vineyard and in the winery.

Tasting notes

Pale straw yellow color with bright golden reflections.

On the nose, it is intense and complex, with aromas of ripe white fruit (peaches, golden apple) and citrus (grapefruit, lemon peel). Hints of aromatic herbs (rosemary, thyme, bay leaf). Cherry blossom, moss, and hay. A wide range of aging notes: from toasted bread crust, puff pastry, and butter, to toasted almonds, custard, coffee, praline, vanilla, and English toffee.

The palate is bold and full of nuances. A balance between ripeness and freshness. The bubbles are fine, melting, and creamy, providing a sensation of fullness. An expressive retronasal pathway confirms the fruit and long aging memories. A mineral touch completes the ensemble.

The Gramona family represents five generations of winemakers. Since the mid-19th century, they have been working their lands in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia (Barcelona), and today they produce sparkling wines under the prestigious Corpinnat quality label, as well as still wines under the umbrella of the D.O. Penedès. Few wineries have made such significant contributions in recent years to elevate Spanish sparkling wines to the level of the great champagnes.

The sparkling wines of Gramona, crafted by Jaume Gramona, one of the foremost experts on bubbles in our country, achieve remarkable levels of elegance and are characterized by their extended aging periods. These sparkling wines, which garner prestigious international accolades, are made following artisanal processes: natural cork stoppers during aging, riddling racks for clarification, and manual disgorgement.

The Gramona family operates under a biodynamic philosophy across approximately 303 hectares. Of these, 72 hectares are owned by the family, while the rest come from Aliances per la Terra, a viticulturist association founded in 2015 and led by Gramona, which adheres to environmentally respectful practices. In 2014, Gramona obtained the Demeter certification, which guarantees biodynamic farming and winemaking for each wine. A few years later, in 2018, it became the first winery on the Peninsula to receive the BIODYVIN biodynamic certification. The Biodyvin label is a highly demanding certification, specific to the wine sector worldwide, and certifies biodynamic practices in both viticulture and winemaking (winery).
