Deep, full-bodied, and with a rustic elegance, the red wine Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas 2019 emerges as the true gem of the family winery Propiedad Vitícola Casa Castillo.
José María Vicente Sánchez-Cerezo created this superb red from the D.O. Jumilla to pay tribute to his father, Nemesio Vicente, the late founder of the winery. For this, he selected the finest monastrell grapes, emblematic of the land and the brand, from the first vineyards that Nemesio planted in the late 70s, in the highest part of his Las Gravas estate, at the foot of the Sierra del Molar.
The altitude of 720 meters above sea level and the sandy loam soils covered with gravel endowed the fruits used in Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas 2019 with good acidity and aromatic complexity. These qualities were enhanced by the meticulous winemaking process in the winery, which included traditional fermentation of the musts in underground vats with temperature control and the malolactic fermentation and aging of the resulting wine for 19 months in foudres.
Propiedad Vitícola Casa Castillo is currently one of the benchmark wineries in Jumilla. The high quality of its creations, based on the native monastrell, has earned it the favor of both the public and specialized critics. This is evidenced by the high scores awarded to its wines, such as the 96 points given to this Casa Castillo Cuvée N Viñas Viejas in its 2015 vintage by The Wine Advocate, the magazine of the prestigious American critic Robert Parker. A true treasure of limited production.
Casa Castillo (1991) is a family-owned 'boutique' winery committed to the terroir and estate wines. In the early nineties, José María Vicente decided to take the leap into winemaking, relying on the vineyards of the estate his grandfather had purchased in the 1940s.
The estate is located on the high plateau of Jumilla, on slopes reaching up to 760 meters in altitude, sheltered by the Sierra del Molar. Already in the 1980s, José María and his father Nemesio initiated a restructuring of the vineyard. After the renovation of the old winery on the estate, the first wines were launched on the market in 1993.
Casa Castillo was one of the pioneers in recognizing the potential of the monastrell grape for producing high-quality wines. Today, it is a benchmark winery for quality, not only in the D.O. Jumilla but also on a national level. Its prestige is largely based on the preservation of those old dry-farmed monastrell vineyards, many of which are planted on their own rootstock.
