General Information

Abadía de Gomariz Crianza 2021 evokes the historical tradition of the D.O. Ribeiro region, where this winery from Ourense is located, in what is considered the oldest wine estate in the entire Iberian Peninsula, dating back to the 10th century.

In this almost ancestral setting, the vineyards of a handful of six estates are found, from which the grapes of sousón, brancellao, ferrol (or ferrón) and mencía used to produce this Crianza come. The clay, schist, and granitic sand soils where the vines are planted impart minerality, and the 12 months of aging in used oak barrels followed by another 6 months in the bottle refined it even further. The result is an easy-to-drink Ribeiro, highly aromatic, spicy, fresh, long, and with mature tannins—characteristics that make it one of the most gastronomically versatile wines of this Galician winery. Abadía de Gomariz Crianza 2021 pairs perfectly with all kinds of red meats, stews, roasts, and cured sausages, especially Iberian ham.

Founded in the 1970s but reestablished as we know it today in the year 2000, Coto de Gomariz is the winery of the Carreiro family. The brand is one of the most prominent references in the D.O. Ribeiro due to the classic profile of its creations and their high quality. The technical direction of the winery is based on working with native varieties, a terroir with exceptional conditions for producing great wines, and ecological and biodynamic agriculture.

Tasting notes

Abadía de Gomariz Crianza displays a dark cherry color with garnet rim.

On the nose, it is very expressive, with a prominent aromatic profile of blackberries, cassis, notes of tree bark, and black licorice, along with a soft mineral (slate) background with smoky and balsamic touches.

On the palate, it is smooth, structured, and elegant. Black fruit sensations and spicy notes are appreciated. Mature tannins and a long, balanced finish.

The winery

Coto de Gomariz is the winery of the Carreiro family. Its name refers to the valley and the village of Gomariz in Ourense, where, since the 10th century and as recorded in the general registry of the Kingdom of Simancas, the oldest wine estate in the Iberian Peninsula is located. The origin of the winery dates back to the 1970s when Ricardo Carreiro Ameijeiras, a native of Barro de Gomariz, returned from South America, where he had emigrated, and decided to resume winemaking. He purchased estates and annexed them to the family heritage, and in 1978 planted O Figueiral, the first mechanized vineyard in the area at that time. The first bottles of Coto de Gomariz came to light in the 1980s.

However, it was not until the year 2000, with the construction of the current winery and the management of his son Ricardo Carreiro Álvarez, that Coto de Gomariz became what it is today: one of the leading wineries of the D.O. Ribeiro.

Today, the winery owns 32 hectares of vineyards cultivated throughout the Alvia valley. Under the technical direction of the winemaker Xose Lois Sebio and following a mix of traditional, biodynamic, and ecological techniques, they produce high-expression wines from native grape varieties such as treixadura, godello, loureira, sousón, and mencía.
