Vega Sicilia acquired the Oremus winery from the Hungarian government in 1993 with the aim of restoring the greatness of the historic sweet wines of the Tokaj region (northeast Hungary). Today, it develops a range of wines unique in the world. At the top is Tokaj Aszú, made with grapes affected by noble rot (botrytis). Tokaj Oremus sources from 100 hectares of first-class vineyards cultivated with native varieties: 60% Furmint, 20% Zéta, 10% Hárslevelü, and 10% Sárgamuskotály.
The vines are rooted in soils of volcanic subsoil clay, rhyolite, and tuff; and are bathed by a special microclimate with cool springs, hot summers, and misty autumn nights. Gravity is used in the facilities for the movement of the wines. Additionally, there are kilometers of underground cellars created in the 13th century where Hungarian oak barrels are stored under optimal temperature and humidity conditions.
Currently, it has an average production of 100,000 bottles of the Mandolás and Petracs brands, and another 100,000 bottles of Aszú and Late Harvest.
