Conde de San Cristóbal Reserva Especial 2020 is born in the ‘La Arenosa’ plot of Pago Valdestremero (Peñafiel), located on a plateau at 900 m altitude, with a north-south orientation and silty-clay-sandy soils with coarse elements. 36-year-old vines contribute concentration and balance. The 2020 climate, with rainfall and slow ripening, brought freshness and complexity to the wine. Its sustainable viticulture and organic treatments ensure the purity of the grapes.
Manual harvest in 12 kg boxes, selection on the sorting table, gentle destemming, and cold maceration (8 ºC, 3-5 days). Controlled alcoholic fermentation (9-12 days, 20-24 ºC), long maceration (7-10 days), and aging for 18-20 months in French oak barrels, aiming for power and elegance.
The winery Conde de San Cristóbal, located in Peñafiel (Valladolid), is synonymous with innovation and respect for the terroir. Its philosophy is based on crafting single-estate wines with sustainable practices and the highest quality. This Reserva Especial reflects the essence of the Marqués de Vargas group: authenticity, character, and elegance.
Conde de San Cristóbal Reserva Especial 2020 pairs perfectly with cured sheep cheese, roasted suckling lamb, grilled ribs, barbecued meats, and cold cuts. Its structure and power make it the perfect companion for intense dishes.
Conde de San Cristóbal Reserva Especial is an intense cherry-colored red wine with garnet edges. Concentrated and deep nose, with fresh fruit and mineral touches. Fresh, powerful, flavorful, rich, and expressive on the palate, with a round and long finish.
Bodegas y Viñedos Marqués de Vargas is a firm that faithfully inherits the legacy of a winemaking saga linked to wine since 1840, when Felipe de la Mata, the eighth Marqués de Vargas, carried out the first plantings of vitis vinifera near Logroño. In 1989, one of his heirs, Pelayo de la Mata, the current Marqués de Vargas, definitively changed the family's winemaking direction and committed to the creation of a winery dedicated to producing small batches of high-quality wines. This is how Bodegas y Viñedos Marqués de Vargas was born, located in the heart of Rioja, on the outskirts of Logroño, with a style reminiscent of French ‘châteaux,’ surrounded by a splendid vineyard.
A 70-hectare vineyard cultivated on poor clay-limestone soils, where traditional native grapes of the D.O.Ca. Rioja such as tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, and graciano dominate, but where there is also space, to a lesser extent, for other experimental varieties. The vines are subjected to very controlled yields, so that each hectare of vineyard produces between 4,000 and 5,000 kilograms of the highest quality grapes in the service of their refined wines.
Over the years, other wineries have joined this original one, forming the Grupo Vinícola Marqués de Vargas, composed of this firm, Pazo San Mauro (D.O. Rías Baixas), and Conde de San Cristóbal (D.O. Ribera del Duero).
