Bodegas Marqués de Vargas is a beautiful ‘château’ on the outskirts of Logroño where small productions of high quality are crafted using the fruits of the surrounding vineyards. Marqués de Vargas Reserva 2020, designed with the estate's collection of plots, reflects the elegant character of this terroir. In its varietal composition, the tempranillo is complemented by a touch of garnacha that adds density and a hint of mazuelo that brings freshness.
Marqués de Vargas Reserva 2020 is a high-end red wine with limited production. It is crafted from a selection of vineyards across the entire “Pradolagar” estate, adjacent to the winery. The 2018 vintage was a low-yield vintage due to the severe frost in April, but it delivered excellent quality, as reflected in this red wine, a blend of tempranillo, garnacha, and mazuelo.
Manual harvest in 12 kg boxes, according to the ripeness and variety of each plot. The grape clusters are placed in refrigeration chambers just minutes after being picked. They remain there overnight at a consistent temperature of 6-8º C to be manually sorted the next day on the sorting table. The winemaking processes in the tanks have been adapted to suit each soil type, using native yeasts from the different plots. This red wine is refined with a long aging process in French oak barrels.
The winery Marqués de Vargas is led by Pelayo de la Mata, the XI Marqués de Vargas and heir to a lineage tied to winemaking and wine trading since 1840. Pelayo de la Mata fulfilled his father Hilario de la Mata's dream: to create his own winery. Thus, Marqués de Vargas was born in 1989, nestled in the Ebro Valley, in Logroño, at the heart of its own vineyard, following the ‘château’ concept: surrounded by a splendid vineyard.
A 70-hectare vineyard cultivated on poor clay-limestone soils, where traditional native grape varieties of the D.O.Ca. Rioja dominate, alongside some experimental varieties. The vines are subjected to very controlled yields.
Marqués de Vargas Reserva 2020 is ideal to pair with grilled red meats, Iberian ham, and sheep cheeses, among others.

Creators' opinion
Cherry red color. Clean and bright. On the nose, it has an elegant fruity character with well-integrated spicy notes of wood. On the palate, it is fresh and fruity, with soft and refined tannins. Prolonged finish. It combines the elegance of our Tempranillos, the density and generosity of the Garnacha, and the freshness of the Mazuelo. A complex and elegant wine.
Bodegas y Viñedos Marqués de Vargas is a firm that faithfully inherits the legacy of a winemaking saga linked to wine since 1840, when Felipe de la Mata, the eighth Marqués de Vargas, carried out the first plantings of vitis vinifera near Logroño. In 1989, one of his heirs, Pelayo de la Mata, the current Marqués de Vargas, definitively changed the family's winemaking direction and committed to the creation of a winery dedicated to producing small batches of high-quality wines. This is how Bodegas y Viñedos Marqués de Vargas was born, located in the heart of Rioja, on the outskirts of Logroño, with a style reminiscent of French ‘châteaux,’ surrounded by a splendid vineyard.
A 70-hectare vineyard cultivated on poor clay-limestone soils, where traditional native grapes of the D.O.Ca. Rioja such as tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, and graciano dominate, but where there is also space, to a lesser extent, for other experimental varieties. The vines are subjected to very controlled yields, so that each hectare of vineyard produces between 4,000 and 5,000 kilograms of the highest quality grapes in the service of their refined wines.
Over the years, other wineries have joined this original one, forming the Grupo Vinícola Marqués de Vargas, composed of this firm, Pazo San Mauro (D.O. Rías Baixas), and Conde de San Cristóbal (D.O. Ribera del Duero).
