Montsant

Montsant

It is made up of 16 municipalities from the Priorat region (Tarragona), Baix Priorat, part of Alt Priorat, and part of Ribera d'Ebre.

Climate
The mountains surrounding the area protect it from the influence of the sea and create a continental climate (instead of the Mediterranean one corresponding to its location). The strong thermal contrasts between day and night favor the ripening of the grape. The humid winds coming from the sea also help to compensate for the summer water deficit.
Soil
There are three basic types of soils in the periphery of the D.O.: the soils are compact and calcareous, with pebbles in the Falset area, they are granitic sands, and in some areas of Cornudella and Falset, there are siliceous slates, low in organic matter and of a stony nature.
