Kind and elegant, conveying the characteristics of the vineyard and each harvest with a clear predominance of fruit and a marked balance between the fruit and its aging in oak.
Professional career
After this research phase, in 2002 María Barúa joined the Technical Team of Bodegas LAN, where she became responsible as Technical Director starting in 2007. She currently also oversees the winemaking at Bodegas Marqués de Burgos (Bodegas LAN's project in Ribera del Duero).
During her years at Bodegas LAN, she has initiated several projects to improve the quality of wine production: -Control and monitoring of the vineyard, both owned and from long-standing collaborators, with a rigorous selection of grapes both in the field and upon arrival at the winery. Testing, fine-tuning, and application of processes such as micro-oxygenation and “battonage”. -Analysis of methods for extracting color and aromas as well as different types of closures. -In-depth study of the entire aging process: type of oak, level of toasting, wood drying time, barrel age, aging times... to apply the most suitable aging process to each of LAN's wines. -In 2007, she created a new winemaking area dedicated to wines from the estate's own vineyard.
During these years, she has also been responsible for the creation of new Rioja wines, such as LAN D12, as well as the development of new projects in Ribera del Duero and Rueda.
