An exclusive wine from Rioja Alta that’s exclusive, silky-smooth and delightful: the sort to enjoy without haste… or guilt.

There are wines that find you even when you're not looking for them, and Volumen 2 is one of them. The second instalment in the range that began with Volumen 1 has now been released by a winery with heart and soul: Consejo de la Alta, a company that works quietly, precisely and lovingly, surprising us with red wines that are clean, impeccably smooth and elegantly charming without any need for fuss. A creation tailored to Vinoselección, impossible to find elsewhere, which offers a new perspective on the essence of Rioja Alta, the sub-region where fine Spanish wine has historically been produced.

General Information

Following the success of Volumen 1, in Volumen 2 Consejo de la Alta has revived the spirit of the fine wine inspired by French tradition that was brought to Rioja from Bordeaux back in the nineteenth century. Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo went into making this red wine, in which red fruit takes centre stage and which is just as good at impromptu get-togethers as it is with formal meals. It was crafted by winemaker Laura Ruiz from a selection of vineyards in Haro, Cihuri and Briones with diverse soils, orientations and climatic conditions, a red wine from a complex and exciting terroir.

Consejo de la Alta is synonymous with history, commitment and visionary thinking. Based in Cenicero, this winery has been producing carefully crafted wines in limited quantities for decades, only embarking on new projects when there is genuine chemistry and trust. That’s why this Volumen 2 is so special: it's the result of a close collaboration that only happens when a winery commits to creating something it won't make for anyone else. It’s the eagerly awaited second part of a saga that began with the sensational Volumen 1, and is continuing now with a renewed focus on the hillsides and fruity identity of Rioja Alta.

In the glass, Volumen 2 showcases the region’s smoother side. Its Tempranillo, enhanced by small percentages of Garnacha (which contributes forest fruits and ripe strawberries) and Graciano (which adds blue flowers, violets and blueberries), displays aromas of cherry and raspberry, delicate floral touches and a subtle background of spices. On the palate, it’s smooth, pleasant and round, with a precise acidity that adds length to the finish and tannins so fine that they seem drawn by hand. And all this comes in a vintage marked by a particular cycle. The harvest began on 29 August in the warmest areas and ended on 11 October in the highest and coolest plots. It was a year affected by drought and high temperatures, which caused uneven ripening among vineyards. In these circumstances, it was essential to sample and taste the grapes to determine the optimum time for harvesting. The weather conditions during harvesting were conducive to excellent grape health, and the final drop in temperature led to more balanced ripening, resulting in wines with good laying down potential.

When you try Volumen 2, you'll understand why this collection exists: it complements its predecessor, expands on its message and invites you to continue discovering the most intimate side of Rioja Alta. It’s perfect with Ibérico pork, poultry stews, lamb, cod, mushrooms or semi-cured cheeses. And best of all: its price. Because rarely will you find a wine with such delicacy, exclusivity and authenticity at such an affordable price. An opportunity not to be missed.
